(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, May 28, 2014 ) Detroit, MI -- Detroit Youth Report’s Detroit LIFE Coalition (referred to as “Detroit LIFE Coalition”) will host an exclusive conversation with educators, parents and concerned citizens at Adams/Butzel Recreation Complex, 10500 Lyndon St, Detroit, MI 48238. The event takes place on Saturday May 31, 2014 from 11a.m to 1p.m. The Public Education Regional Meeting-Part 1 is free with registration.
During the Public Education Regional Meeting-Part 1 the Detroit LIFE Coalition will highlight structural educational imbalances in education and introduce proven methods for increasing opportunity for Detroit students, parents and educators. “We’ll not only explore solutions proven successful in some of the most challenging cities across the nation, but we will also get a chance to see how inequitable policies are significant factors in how public schools are funded and what that means for the students who attend those schools,” says a member of the Detroit Life Coalition.
Detroit LIFE Coalition will highlight the fact that six decades after the landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the nation’s public schools are still separate and unequal. For example, the current, market-based approach to education reform has increased poor policy making and economic inequities in access to educational resources and opportunities.
Guests will see a special screening of a documentary produced by the national alliance, which includes the Detroit LIFE Coalition. The documentary highlights the journey of multiple cities converging on Washington DC to express concerns relating to, decreasing resources available for public education and the role inequitable policies play in the quality of urban education. The documentary systematically shows how others cities concerns mirror the challenges that Detroit Public Schools face.
