(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, June 09, 2014 ) Novi , Mi -- Cats are wonderful pets; however, the long debate of what to do about their destructive clawing behavior has been an issue since kitties first became indoor companions. While their soft cuddly personalities make them wonderful pets, when they claw up a new curtain or tear up your sofa this is a time when a pet owner may wonder what they have gotten themselves into. Cats are even more tricky than dogs because they do not respond to normal negative reinforcement techniques, meaning you can't just tell a cat "no" and expect them to respond. The good news is that studies have shown that destructive behavior in cats usually stems from boredom, and taking measures to ensure your cat is not bored can really reduce the amount of destructive behavior that takes place.
There are many affordable cat toys that can provide your kitty with hours of entertainment per day. Choosing to buy 2-3 cat toys and switching them out every few weeks can help your kitty stay entertained. A cat and mouse "chase" toy is a great way to keep your cats active. Also, keeping a cat scratching post around your house to help the cat scratch their nails on and stop scratching on your nice leather sofa is a good idea.
It make take a few weeks of having the new toys around for your cat to stop the destructive behavior. You can reinforce the cat with positive behavior by giving them a treat when they do use these new toys vs. your furniture. Also, taking 10-15 minutes a few times a day to rub and talk to your kitty can make them feel happy and loved. Sometimes negative behavior is an attempt to get your attention. If you apply these techniques there is a very good chance that negative behavior will decline and positive behavior will increase with time.
