(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, June 24, 2014 ) Novi , Mi -- According to the Center for Disease Control, 126 persons in 26 different states have been infected with an outbreak of two distinct strands of Salmonella. Of those infected, 35% have been hospitalized although as of May 27, 2014 no deaths have been reported. The illnesses seem to have occurred in the period from February 4 to May 15 of this year.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually take between 12 and 72 hours to develop and can last from a few days to up to a week. Children are especially prone to these infections, as well as the elderly and others with compromised immune systems. Poultry, beef, dairy, eggs, and even vegetables are susceptible to salmonella and show no visible signs of contamination. Other likely carriers of salmonella include reptiles and small rodents.
Proper hygiene and cooking techniques are the best way to prevent the transfer of salmonella and other foodborne illness. Todd Snively, President of Buy Wholesale Cheap, which sells home as well as professional health and medical supplies, offered the following advice. "Handwashing is especially important before and after handling uncooked foods. Thoroughly cleaning cooking utensils and cutting boards, along with using separate cutting boards for vegetables and meats are other key rules to preventing the spread of common foodborne illnesses. And when cooking, always cook meats to the correct internal temperatures recommended by the USDA."
Fortunately, regulations are in place that require the origins of food products to be traceable back to their source. Using these methods in addition to epidemiologic laboratory testing determined the source of the outbreak was a poultry hatchery in Ohio. Many of the affected individuals reported handling live poultry originating at Mt. Healthy Hatcheries, which has been at the center of several previous salmonella outbreaks including in 2013 and 2012. The company claims to be addressing the problem and released a statement saying, "Our hatcheries are working with USDA on a voluntary salmonella reduction program, have increased bio security measures and are continuing to obtain counsel from an outside expert to reduce the risks of salmonella in our flocks."
