(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, July 21, 2014 ) Novi , Mi -- Each year there are more than 25,000 reported cases of Bartonella henselae infection in the U.S. alone. This infection, better known as Cat Scratch Disease or Cat Scratch Fever, predominately affects the younger population with 80-90% of cases occurring in children under the age of 21. It is most commonly transmitted through cat scratches or bites and though there have been no confirmed instances, may also be transmitted by cat fleas or ticks.
Symptoms of Cat Scratch Disease can appear between a few days to two weeks after transmission although some cases may take up to two months. The appearance of a small, red or brown rounded bump at the transmission site along with the swelling of the lymph nodes closest to the transmission site are the primary symptoms and are often accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, and general malaise. Medical treatment is usually not required although a small percentage of cases necessitate the use of antibiotics.
Cats themselves typically show no signs of carrying the disease although they may occasionally present with fever or swollen glands. As the primary source of infection in cats is carrying fleas, a proper flea control regiment consisting of oral or topical medications is important to preventing the disease. Todd Snively, President of Buy Wholesale Cheap, adds, "Many veterinarian also agree that providing felines with a suitable Cat Scratching Post may also help control the spread of the disease by giving the cat a proper outlet for scratching and helping to clean its nails." Besides a scratching post, cat toys can help to tame a cats aggression and reduce the chance of lashing out.
While the symptoms of Cat Scratch Disease may be uncomfortable they do not usually require treatment and typically resolve themselves within a few weeks to a few months for more severe cases. The major danger is to immunocompromised persons who should take caution around animals and have their pets tested for the bacteria.
