(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, November 01, 2015 ) Taylor, MI -- November 2nd is National Deviled Egg Day, a holiday dedicated to the tasty deviled egg.
Deviled eggs are eggs which have been boiled, shelled, cut in half and filled with the hard-boiled eggs' yolk mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise and mustard. Other frequently added ingredients include: tartar sauce, Worcestershire sauce, diced pickle, pickle relish, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, chipotle chilies, turmeric, vinegar, green olives, pimentos, poppy seed, thyme, cilantro, minced onion, caviar, cream, capers or sour cream.
After the filling is scooped or piped back into the egg cup, it's often sprinkled with paprika as a garnish. Caviar, anchovy, bacon, herring or jalapenos are some other popular options used as a garnish to decorate the deviled eggs. They are usually served cold as a side dish, appetizer or a main course, and they are a common holiday and party food.
Deviled eggs are so well-loved that special sectioned carrying dishes and plates have been designed for them. And prepared and packaged deviled eggs are now available in supermarkets.
The first known reference to the term "deviled", in relation to food, appeared in 1786. By the 19th century it was used regularly when referring to spicy or zesty foods including eggs prepared with mustard, pepper or other ingredients stuffed in the yolk cavity.
In parts of the South and Midwest, the terms "stuffed eggs", "salad eggs", "dressed eggs", or "angel eggs" are also used, particularly when served in connection with church functions, thereby avoiding the name "devil". The term "angel eggs" is also used for deviled eggs stuffed with healthier alternatives.
