(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, November 25, 2015 ) Taylor, MI -- The majority of pet owners say they treat their dogs and cats like members of the family and that extends to including their pets in holiday festivities and holiday gift-giving. According to Petfinder.com, 63% of dog owners and 58% of people with cats will give their pets Christmas presents. And 40% of dog owners and 37% of cat owners will hang Christmas stockings for their pets. Overall Americans will spend $50 billion on their pets this year including $5 billion spent on holiday gifts.
Sixty-eight percent of dogs and cats receiving Christmas gifts can look forward to a toy, 45 percent to food or other treat, 8 percent will receive new bedding, 6 percent new clothing, 3 percent a leash, collar or harness and 3 percent new grooming products. Some pets will get more than one gift.
New trends highlighted by the American Pet Product Association this year include special offerings from retailers that normally focus on humans, such as Omaha Steaks which now sells steak pet treats and Paul Mitchell which offers a full range of pet shampoos and pet hygiene products.
