(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, June 15, 2016 ) Detroit, MI – At noon on Saturday at the MGM Casino, Harlan “Jay” Bivens will receive an award for his role as a community leader for Detroit youth. The B.A.L.L. Foundation targets children seven (7) to seventeen (17), and it will be awarding several people the Excellence Under 40 award. Along with Byron Suggs, Jason Appling, Lauren Bealore, and Ashlee Henderson, Bivens will be receiving the honor.
Bivens owns JaysFades.com Hair and Nail Salon and is the co-director of the Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM), a non-profit group looking to develop children and young adults by connecting them to different people. The group helps coordinate programs, like Stomp Out HIV and the Detroit Scholarship & Resource Fair held at Cobo Hall each year.
Harlan Bivens feels that the helping the youth is an important part of making the City of Detroit better. He remarked, “What Detroit needs is to work on the generational divide and Detroit needs to focus on our future. We have some brilliant individuals that do not have an opportunity to showcase their intelligence, gifts, talent, and education.”
He thinks that many older people in Detroit can do more to help the youth grow and develop stronger and improve the city’s future prospects in the process.
What does he think people can do to help?
“Volunteer with an organization that is already helping children. We’re constantly looking for people who can help improve our community and improve the lives of children who, otherwise, might not get the help they need.”
Bivens’ non-profit group BDYM will be hosting a golf program for children called Swing for Greatness. The program introduces golf to youth, teens, and young adults in and around Detroit. The goal of the program is to help make what many consider to be an elite sport accessible to children who might not otherwise be exposed to it. Learning golf helps children develop patience, critical thinking skills, decision making, discipline, and proper etiquette.
Bivens has more than earned his award for community excellence, and he and the BDYM continue to bring great opportunities for children, teens, and young adults.
