(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, October 15, 2014 ) Chicago, IL – The Fall season kicks off with what’s known as America’s Punk Rock Labor Day Festival otherwise known as, Riot Fest. This Alternative music festival spans three cities including Chicago, Denver and Vancouver and features top acts including The Cure, Weezer, Janes Addiction as well as 70’s classic acts such as Television and Patti Smith. The Chicago portion of the show lasted for three days and took place in Humboldt Park. Hot Metro Finds covered the festival and outlined a grueling set list of 40 bands in just three days. The notes were compiled by Ted Cantu and published onto the site and other supportive web media.
This is the tenth year anniversary for the festival so a number of bands dedicated their entire set by performing an entire classic album live. The punk favorite, The Descendents delivered, “Milo Goes To College” and Cheap Trick performed, “Heaven Tonight”. Each day of the festival brought its challenges from rain, to sticky black mud, (several fans lost shoes) and swarming crowds on the final day. There was a bottleneck of crowd traffic due to the placement of the carnival games and rides. The biggest number of people arrived on day three of the festival when Social Distortion, The Cure, and Weezer took the stage until late Sunday evening.
The festival commentary is told by one narrative and gives a behind the scene view of the best performances. There are reviews of The Buzzcocks, Paul Weller, Patti Smith, Tegan and Sara, The Pizza Underground, NOFX, The Offspring, The Flaming Lips, Circa Survive, Title Fight, The Cure and Black Joe Lewis just to name a few. This years festival delivered a wide range of small indie bands as well as top headliners and spanned several stages.
The concert setting is definitive to the popularity of the Alternative radio scene and indie rock movement. This also allowed fans to congregate from all over the country and celebrate the eclectic sounds together. The performances started as early as 10AM and lasted to as late as midnight. With the oncoming winter months these fans went out with a loud riot kicking, screaming and resisting the summers end.
