(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, October 15, 2015 ) Taylor, MI -- October 18th is National Chocolate Cupcake Day. Chocolate cupcakes are delightful treats served at gourmet bakeries and kitchen tables across the country.
Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation of "a cake to be baked in small cups" was written in American Cookery (by Amelia Simmons). The earliest known documentation of the term "cupcake" was in 1828 in "Seventy-five Recipes for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats" by Eliza Leslie. Cupcakes are everywhere these days, but they weren't a household name until 1919 when Hostess introduced its first snack cake, the CupCake.
There are two theories about how they got their name. One claims that the miniature cakes were originally baked in cups and consequently called cupcakes. The other suggests that the name comes from the recipe, which was measured out by the cup—one cup butter, two cups sugar, three cups flour, four eggs, one cup milk, one spoonful baking soda. Cupcakes have also been called Fairy Cakes and Patty Cakes.
Cupcakes were originally baked in heavy pottery cups. Today some bakers still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large tea cups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.
Cupcakes are now made with a variety of flavors, ingredients, and decorations, but simple chocolate cupcakes remain a perennial favorite. For example Slick Cups™ includes an easy recipe for Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes with the purchase of a set of silicone baking cups.
Silicone baking cups are reusable muffin cups that are non-toxic, heat resistant and bake directly on a cookie sheet. They clean easily under running water and on the top rack of a dishwasher. Many brands, like Slick Cups, have a no questions asked guaranteed return policy.
A set of 12 Slick Cups ™ can be purchased at a 35% discount from Amazon for a limited time while supplies last. Purchase price includes the recipe for scuffins, the popular muffin-scone combination seen on YouTube, and an electronic recipe book titled "Slick Cups Baking Cups Recipes," which includes the recipe for Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes just in time to celebrate National Chocolate Cupcake Day.
