(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, November 08, 2015 ) Taylor, MI -- In celebration of National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week from Nov. 3-9, the Humane Society of the United States encourages pet lovers to reach out and support their local shelters and rescue groups. Approximately 3,500 animal shelters across the United States serve the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who need refuge each year.
National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week was founded by The HSUS in 1996 to encourage people to become acquainted with their local shelters and rescues and to learn how they can assist this lifesaving work.
The Humane Society offers these tips to celebrate the week. 1. The Humane Society recommends that prospects learn what to expect before adopting a pet. If they don't understand the challenges and rewards of adopting the pet beforehand, they may become frustrated and return the pet to the shelter.
2. There is no end to the toys that can be made by combining fabric, yarn, and recyclables with imagination. Toys bring much-needed fun into the lives of local shelter and rescue pets.
3. Creating "Adopt-Me" vests spotlight available pets at adoption events held by shelters and rescues.
4. Posting a "Like" of a Shelter Pet Project on Facebook helps promote the project in the community.
5. Shelters and rescue groups always need towels, toys, and other supplies. Their websites often contain their wish lists and what's in short supply.
6. Volunteers can help make life better for homeless animals, for example carpenters, electricians, or dog-walkers.
7. It makes the job of shelters and rescues easier if cats and dogs are outfitted with collars and proper ID such as microchips an ID tags.
8. Cats should be kept indoors where they are safe, although they may be taken out on walks if comfortable in a harness and leash. Dogs should be kept on a leash when off their home property.
To celebrate Animal Shelter Awareness Week, a reflective pet harness made of nylon and covered with reflective strips is available from Grama's Kitchen at Amazon at a 23% discount for a limited time and while supplies last. The harness comes in 3, sizes small, medium and large.
