(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, April 13, 2016 ) Plymouth, MI – The Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce has nearly 800 members and separates itself from many other similar chambers by not only helping local area businesses prosper, but it also emphasizes helping the surrounding its community. It heavily depends upon the help from volunteers. Last Monday, the Chamber awarded one of its ambassadors Heather Doering the Volunteer of the Year at the Taste of Plymouth event. The award was presented to Doering by Chamber President Wes Graff and Jim Zandee of Certipro.
Locally known branding expert Doering mentioned, “I really enjoy (volunteering). It’s a blast! I like being part of things.” She earned her award by being an active member of the Ambassador committee, mentoring new Chamber members, attending local Plymouth company ribbon cuttings, volunteering for the Chambers three big fundraisers. Plus she shared that she, “…supported staff and members through referrals and (her) connections.”
According to an article on OnGood, “Studies have shown that those who volunteer often show higher levels of happiness, life-satisfaction, self-esteem, a sense of control over life, and physical health, as well as lower levels of depression.” An article on LifeHack states that volunteering helps people expand their networks, an often overlooked but important part of branding, “You’re getting to know people involved in many different walks in life that you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.”
Doering also mentioned that it’s been a difference maker in her branding business, Ace in the Hole Branding. Many people are willing to work when they know they are getting paid for it, but Doering understands how she can increase her business and improve her brand positioning by handling things without always having to get paid immediately.
Often new members might want to help but are not sure how to contribute. Doering tries to remove that barrier for the Chamber’s members by helping connect them. She realizes that many people, “(have a) lack of knowledge and understanding about what needs to be done (for each the Chamber and the overall community). I've been on a mission to educate new members and help get them involved.”
Besides trying to help improve the community and the local business climate, Doering adds, “It's an amazing group of people dedicated to enriching a community!!”
