(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, November 27, 2015 ) Taylor, MI -- National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige who is also the founder of National Dog Day, National Cat Day and National Puppy Day. It's celebrated twice each year on July 31st and December 2nd. National Mutt Day is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs. The goal is to save 10,000 Mutts each year.
In addition to raising awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation this unofficial holiday is meant to educate the public about the magnitude and desirability of mixed breed dogs awaiting new homes.
Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters desperately searching for a new home. One of the county's most famous movie dogs is Benji, a mixed breed Terrier.
There are many ways to celebrate National Mutt Day, for example, visiting a shelter, adopting a mutt, donating at least $5 to a local animal shelter, volunteering to walk a dog, donating food and other supplies needed by local animal shelters.
To celebrate National Mutt Day, a reflective pet harness made of nylon and covered with reflective strips is available from Grama's Kitchen on Amazon at a 23% discount for a limited time and while supplies last. The harness comes in 3 sizes small, medium and large.
