(Detroit.CityRegions.Com, December 17, 2016 ) Rochester Hills, MI – Rochester Hills Towing, a locally owned towing service in Rochester Hills, recently advised homeowners on the dangers of the extra waste generated during the holidays and the impact on drivers and vehicles.
“Everyone likes the gifts and gatherings that come with the holiday season,” said the owner of Rochester Hills Towing, “but what many do not realize is the danger from the extra garbage generated can create for pedestrians and motorists, especially when snow is covering the ground.”
Tow trucks see increased calls during the winter due to slippery driving conditions and vehicles that do not operate well in the cold weather. There is also an increase in calls due to collisions with non-vehicular objects, such as trash cans, garbage bags, and large refuse items like old TV’s, boxes, and more.
“All the extra refuse, especially immediately following a holiday, can create additional hazards,” continued the Rochester Hills Towing rep. “Winds can blow debris into the street causing hazards in the roadways. People often place garbage cans and bags too close to the road, which can be perilous for motorists who hit a patch of ice, especially when it is something large like an old television or refrigerator.”
He recommended several ways for homeowners to ensure everyone is safe around them.
1. Do not set out garbage until the night before or the morning of pickup. 2. Ensure that all garbage is properly stored in cans prior to pick up. 3. Place the cans at least 3 feet away from the curb, whenever possible. 4. If possible, wait to set out cans until after snowplows have finished clearing snow from the area.
Drivers are also advised to slow down, allow for extra time, especially when snow is falling or has recently fallen, and exercise additional caution when traveling in residential areas.
